Reaffirming Hertsmere First's commitment to local democracy
Elstree & Borehamwood Town Council 27th June 2026
At the Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council meeting on 27 June 2026 , Cllr Dan Ozarow reaffirmed Hertsmere First’s opposition to the proposed suspension of local elections due in May 2027.
As Dan explained, councillors were elected in 2023 with a four-year mandate. Delaying elections until 2028 undermines local democracy and erodes trust.
At the Town Council's General Management Committee (GMC) meeting on 11th June 2026, Labour and Conservative members voted to recommend to an outside body that our town council elections (scheduled for 2027) be suspended for a year, until 2028 - see clerk's report below. Only Hertsmere First opposed this assault on democracy, and voted against the recommendation.
Democracy should be protected, never abused. We will always stand for transparency, accountability and the right of residents to choose their representatives.
